VCS has added the politically most important demographic information from 2000 Census to its entire voter file. Coding was added to individual voter records showing the following census information:
Black
Married
Median Income
Asian
Children in Household
Population Density
Hispanic
College Graduate
Median Years in School
White
The match was performed at the ZIP+4 level, producing the highest possible level of accuracy. The ethnic variables will generally match the census block (block face) where the voter lives. Other variables are reported by the Census Department at the block group level and thus will be more representative of the local neighborhood. The size of block groups varies, but they generally contain 30 to 40 blocks.
Each voter is assigned a value from zero to nine for each variable. The tables below show what census values are represented by the coded values for each variable. The table contains the range of values from the census data for each coded value on the VCS file. For the Ethnic and Household Variables, the numbers represent percentages (0-1 = 0-1 %) The next column shows the percent of ZIP+4’s, nationwide, that are represented by that code value. Finally the cumulative percent of ZIP+4’s, nationwide, are given for all coding less than or equal to the value.
Census data can be used for counts or selections at no extra charge. If a file is delivered with census flags present, however, then there is an extra charge for use of the census data.
